    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Pitcher whose form and decoration indicate that it was made by L. D. Funkhouser & Co., Strasburg, Virginia.

     

    Luther D. Funkhouser was a pottery salesman and had local Strasburg Potters like Hickerson make pottery with his stamp.  He retailed stoneware from around 1866 to 1903.  One of his main customers was William Kinnier of Lynchburg, Virginia (H. E. Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, pp. 407-409). 

     

    This beauty features a Tall Neck, Tooled Shoulder, Slightly Bulbous Body, Flared Base, Applied Handle with Cobalt Accents at the Terminals, and Brushed Cobalt Decoration.  The decoration includes 5 dashes down the spout and three units of comma vining with center dangling floral.  Stands 11 3/4" tall

     

    Very Good Condition.  Two minor nibbles on top of the rim (1/8", 3/16"), six narrow chips on the base (1/4" to 1/2"), and a faint 4" hairline in the back below the handle that wraps under 1 1/2".  No cracks, stains, or restoration.  A recess on the right side in the making.

     

    Ships double-boxed, insured, and FREE

     

    Excellent Condition.  A 1/4" chip inside the rim and two 1/4" chips outside the rim.  That's it!  No base chips,  hairlines, cracks, stains or restoration.
