Item 10013
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Tobacco Jar.
The decoration reminds me of the work of Asa Smith, his son Asa, and Howard Hobart who worked in Norwalk, Connecticut from about 1849 to the early 1860's (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 58-60).
Dating to the mid-19th Century, this beauty features Whimsical Decoration with Blossom and Leaves (looks like a crab) at the Top, Leaves in the Middle, and the Capacity Number at the Bottom. All the decoration is executed with a slip cup in bright and shiny cobalt. Stands 11" tall.
Good Condition. Four small chips inside the rim in the back (1/8" to 1/4"), a 1" hairline in the rim on the left side, a some scattered glaze flakes on the left side (closeup). No outer rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
