Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Stoneware Jar attributed to R. J. Grier of Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Ralph Grier and family ran a pottery in Mount Jordan, Chester County, Pennsylvania from the 1840's to 1910 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 12-13).

Circa 1870, this beauty features a Larger Size, Squared Rim with Deep Groove Below to Facilitate Tying a Cover Over the Top, and Three Brushed Cobalt Leaves from the Rim and a Tall Flower on Each Side.  Additional cobalt swirl under each handle.  Very pretty cobalt on a medium gray glaze for eye-pleasing contrast.  Stands 13 3/4" tall.

Excellent Condition.  Two chips inside the rim (1/4", 1/2"), a minor 1/8" nibble outside the rim, a narrow 1" chip under one handle, and some faint scattered staining from use.  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
