Item 10158
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "A. J. Buttler, Manufacturer, New Brunswick, N.J."
This is the work of Alfred J. Buttler who worked in New Brunswick from 1862 to 1872 (M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey, pp. 132, 139).
Buttler made squatty jugs and this one is no exception. Some have described this shape as "igloo." It was likely designed for use on wagons and boats where the jug needed to be more stable in transit. The jug features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Freehand Capacity Number Framed by Tulips. Measures 11 1/2" tall and 10" wide.
Good Condition with Touchup. A 3/8" chip near the bottom of the handle, and some touchup around the bottom from 1" to 2" (excluding the front). Entirely as made inside, so I suspect there was some glaze flaking at the base, but no cracks. Otherwise, no chips, hairline, cracks, or stains.
