Item 8583
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 1 Gallon Yellow Ware Pitcher made and stamped by "Ballard & Brothers, Burlington, VT."
This is one of the pottery stamps of the brothers Alfred, Orrin, and Hiram Ballard who made stoneware in Burlington, Vermont from 1856-1867 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 45-46).
This beauty sports a very Graceful Spout Embossed with Grapevines and Clusters of Grape, a Shoulder with a Garland of Five-Petaled Flowers, a Body with a Stag Hunt on One Side and a Boar Hunt on the Other, and a Hound Handle. Crisp mold lines. Stands 9 1/4" to the top of the handle.
This is the only one of these that I have ever seen. I could find only one in the online archives.
Excellent Condition. A minor pinhead-size nibble on the tip of the spout, and two chips on the footer (1/2", 1"- closeups). No rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. It has been in storage for a half-century.
