Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 3 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. Bennage & J. A Sutherland, Springfield, Portage County, Ohio."
This is the work of J. Bennage and James A. Sutherland who partnered in stoneware manufacture in the mid to late 1830's (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 61-62).
This jar is from the Treichler collection.
This beauty features an Early Ovoid Form with Tall Rim, the Capacity Number on the Rim with Cobalt Wash, the Pottery Stamp in Four LInes of Impressed on the Shoulder with Cobalt Wash, and Cobalt Accent at the Front of the Handle Terminals. Stands 13" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some light scattered staining, minor nibbles on the inner seating ring where the lid would sit, three small chips outside the rim (1/8" to 3/8"), a minor surface X on the back (closeup), and a few small chips on the base. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
