Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this splendid Folk Art Lion created by Billy Ray Hussey of Moore County, North Carolina.
Hussey is a recognized master southern folk art potter. The lion is one of his signature pieces, being modeled on the Solomon Bell folk art lion in the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Circa 1995, this lion is signed on the underside "BH" with the number 45.
This lion comes with a 36 page illustrated catalogue from an exhibit at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, North Carolina held in 1997-1998 entitled, "Billy Ray Hussey: North Carolina Visionary Potter."
This beauty features a Wide, Tooth-Filled Smile, Elaborate and Plentiful "Coleslaw" Mane, Looped Tail, and a Brown/Green/Yellow Glaze reminicent of Shenandoah Valley Pottery. Measures 9 1/2" long, 5" wide, and 7" tall.
