Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Jar made for "J. T. C. Bowman & Co., Dealer in General Merchandise, Turtle Creek, PA."  Turtle Creek is a small borough in Allegheny County 13 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The form and decoration indicate that this jar was made by R. T. Williams of New Geneva, Pennsylvania who potted  from 1882 to 1895 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 168-70).

Circa 1885, this beauty features a Larger Size, a Stripe at the Rim, a Wavy Stripe at the Shoulder, the Merchant Advertising in the Middle in an Arch, and a Freehand 5 Capacity Number flanked by 4 Dashes on Each Side and Underscored with a Stripe.  The cobalt is strong and the stencil crisp and complete.  Stands 15 5/8" tall.

Very Good Condition.  A minor faint Y-shaped surface line under the right handle, and a tight Y-shaped hairline on the bottom of the left side with a tail that wraps under as a nearly invisible 5" line on the underside.   No chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
