Item 8821
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this scrumptious 3 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "Burger & Lang, Rochester, N.Y."
This is the mark of John Burger, Jr., George Burger, and their brother-in-law, George Lang who ran the family's pottery under this stamp from 1867-1877 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports the Oval Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a signature decoration for this maker: An Elaborate Cobalt Tulip Executed with a Slip Cup. The tulip sports five leaves and a blossom with three petals with scalloped edges. The decorators at Burger were some of the best and this tulip shows considerable skill in shading and accenting of the decoration. They also mixed some gorgeous cobalt as they did the day this jug was decorated. Stands 15 12" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 3/4" wide chip on the left side of the spout (closeup), and some staining on the bottom of the left side. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
