Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "Burger & Lang, Rochester, N.Y."
This is the mark of John Burger, Jr., George Burger, and their brother-in-law, George Lang who ran the family's pottery under this stamp from 1867 to 1877 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports the Oval Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number "3", and a Fancy Tulip Executed with a Slip Cup. The tulip sports five leaves and a blossom with three petals-- all with shading and accenting. The artist was quite skilled. Measures 10 1/4" tall adn 11" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. A minor 3/16" chip inside the rim, some minor nibbles on the left handle, a few flakes on the bottom of the right side, a 3" surface craze line to the left of the decoration that shows when wet, and some light staining from use. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A stone ping on the rim by the right handle in the making.
