Item 4242
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 3 Gallon Ovoid Jug stamped, "C. J. Merrill."
This is the mark of Calvin J. Merrill, one of Ohio's earliest potters who worked in Springfield Township and Middlebury, Ohio in the 1830's to 1850's. He mainly worked alongside his more famous brother, E. J. Merrill, but did work independently for a time as this jug attests (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 30-33).
Made around 1850, this jug has an Early Ovoid Form with the Pottery Stamp Accented in Cobalt, and with Cobalt Accents at the Handle Terminals. Stands 15 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some staining on the right side from use. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A superficial drying/firing line on the left side near the bottom in the making and glazed over (closeup). A swatch of Albany slip glaze on the left side at the shoulder from the making as well.
