Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jug made for "Caspar Vetter, Importer and Wholesale Dealer in Fine Whiskies and Wines, 437 Poplar St., Cor. Lawrence St. Philadelphia. Old Chimney Corner Pure Rye-- Sole Proprietor, Telephone Connection. Established 1860."
The is little doubt that the jug was made by the Sherwood Brothers Pottery of New Brighton, Pennsylvania (1877 to c. 1900). They made this two-toned jug and widely distributed their product prior to Prohibition (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 141-42).
Circa 1900, this beauty features a Small 1/2 Gallon Size, Two-Toned Glaze, and a Bordered Label in 7 Lines of Detailed Advertising. Stands 8 3/4" tall.
