Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this attractive 2 Gallon Preserve Jar marked "Cortland."
This is the work of Madison Woodruff who ran the pottery in Cortland, New York from 1849-1885 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty sports a Tooled Rim and Shoulder that Allows for a Lid, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Trio of Tulips Executed with a Slip Cup. The floral boasts four striped leaves and three dotted blossoms. Strong cobalt too! Stands 10 3/4" tall.
Good Condition. Small chips around the inner rim where a lid would sit, a 1/2" flat chip on the right handle with a 3" surface craze line below (closeup), and an amateur restoration for a 4" hairline and chip on the rim in the back (closeup from both sides). No base chips or stains.
