Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT ."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 43-44).
This beauty features a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Bird on a Leaf Executed with a Brush in Strong Cobalt. The birdie is 9" from from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tailfeathers. Measures 11" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Good Condition. Five chips inside the rim (1/4" to 1/2"), and five outside the rim (1/4" to 1"), and some waterglass staining inside and traces outside. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
