Item 6905
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this mysterious 1 Gallon Ovoid Jar stamped "E. W. Smith."
This may be a merchant or a maker. I have not been able to find out who this is, but it did come from an Ohio collection with lots of obscure potter names. There were several Smiths working at potters in NE Ohio.
Circa 1850, this beauty features an Ovoid form with Tall and Straight Rim, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent the Front, and the Potter or Merchant Stamp with Cobalt Wash. Stands 9 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two chips outside the rim (1/4", 3/4"), a surface-only X on the back (closeup), and some staining from use. That's it! No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks or restoration.
