Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Stoneware Churn with Double Parrots on Plumes made and stamped by "F. B. Norton & Co., Worcester, Mass."
This is the mark of Frank Norton and Frederick Hancock who operated the pottery in Worcester using this stamp from 1858-1877 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 52-53).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and Two Large Parrot on a Plume Decoration Underscored by a Tornado. This was one of Norton's signature parrot decoration on steroids and is typically found with gorgeous cobalt like this crock exhibits. This larger size churn allows for these parrots to have a mate. Stands 17 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. Minor nibbles inside the rim and on the inner lid seating ring. Chips on the back of the rim, a Y-shaped in-body hairline below the decoration (closeup 1) and below the right handle (closeup 2). No base chips, cracks, or restoration. Some scattered light staining from use. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A 1/4" stone ping on the rim in the front in the making.
