Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 2 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "Fenton & Hancock, St. Johnsbury, VT."

This is the mark of Leander Fenton, Jr. and a partner named Hancock (possibly Frederick Hancock) who ran the family pottery in St. Johnsbury in the 1850's until it burned down in 1858 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 46).

This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Floral Garland Across the Front.  The floral is executed with precision using a slip cup and sports strong and bright cobalt.  Stands 11 3/4" tall.

Good Condition.  Wear around the inner lid seating ring, two chips outside the rim in the back (1/4", 3/4"), a 1 1/2" hairline from the rim to the left handle and a 6" hairline below that handle to the base with a couple flakes beside it, and some staining from use.  No base chips or restoration.
