Item 10366
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks, is this early 1 Gallon Ovoid Lidded Jar marked "BOSTON."
This beauty is readily attributed to Frederick Carpenter who worked in Charlestown from 1804-1827 and made pieces marked Boston for that market. The "BOSTON" with the larger "B" and the ochre dip indicate Carpenter's work from 1801 to 1811 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 48-49).
This jar has all the indications of being Carpenter's work: An Early Ovoid Form, Ochre Dip Top and Bottom, and "BOSTON" in all Capital Letters with the Larger B. Stands 10 1/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. Six chips around the rim (1/4" to 3/8"), wo adjacent 1/4" chips on the rim and one at the base (1/4"). No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 1" stone ping on the rim in the back a few in the body in the making.
