Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Gorgeous 2 Gallon Jug whose decoration indicates that it was made by Madison Woodruff of Cortland, N.Y.
Madison Woodruff ran the pottery in Cortland, New York from 1849-1885 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty sports a Larger Size, Freehand 2 Capacity Number, and Huge Tulip in Brilliant Cobalt Blue. The three leaves, stem, and stamin are executed with a slip cup and the two-petaled blossom was created with two wide brush strokes. Did I say "brilliant cobalt"! Stands 13" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip on the spout, a partially removed salt drip on the left side, and some light staining from use. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Two contact marks on the right shoulder in the making.
