James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Circa 1880, this beauty features a Large Size and Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down, two straight and a wavy stripe accent the rim, a garland of tulips grace the shoulder, the company advertising surrounding a floral and framed by leaves on the sides and roses on the bottom corners dress up the middle, and the capacity number flanked by leaves and underscored by a stripe finishes the embellishment at the bottom. Crisp decoration, and strong cobalt on a light gray clay for delightful contrast. Stands 16" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip on the left handle and a 1/2" chip on the right handle. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A narrow 1" chip on the left handle and some mottling on the left front rim are in the making.
