Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this fantastic 3 Gallon Decorarted Stoneware Jar made by "Hamilton and Jones, Greensboro, PA."
This is the work of Frank Hamilton and John Jones who worked in Greensboro, Pennsylvania from 1865 to 1897 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Circa 1880, this beauty features a Larger Size, Grooved Rim for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accents, and Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down are a broad stripe framing the rim, another broad stripe accompanied by a wavy one accenting the shoulder, the company advertising in large letters in a swirl with floral accents in the middle, and another wavy and broad strip at the bottom. The decoration is complete and executed in strong cobalt on a medium gray glaze for powerful contrast. Stands 14" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 3/4" chip under the rim in the back by a 1 1/4" chip on the backside of the left handle (closeup). No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
