Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Jar that reads, "From Hamilton and Jones, Greensboro, Greene Co., PA."
This is the work of Frank Hamilton and John Jones who worked in Greensboro, Pennsylvania from 1865 to 1897 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Circa 1870, this beauty features a Tooled Rim with Two Cobalt Stripes, a Wavy Stripe at the Shoulder, Vining Across the Top, the Company Advertising in Large Block Letters in the Middle, and the Capacity Number Flanked by Two Stripes and Underscored by a Stripe at the Bottom. The stencil is complete and crisp and the cobalt rich and dark. Strong contrast and exceptional visual appeal.
Very Good Condition. Minor chips on the handles, and some staining and glaze wear. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
