Item 10841
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this uncommon 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "Havens."
This is the work of the Havens potters of Falls and Springfield Townships of Muskingham County, Ohio. It is likely the work of Samuel J. Havens (1832-1913). The family worked from around 1860 to the turn of the century. Few pieces of their pottery are marked (Jeff Carskadden and Richard Gartley, eds., James L. Murphy's Checklist of 19th-Century Bluebird Potters and Potteries in Muskinigum County, Ohio, pp. 243-245).
This beauty features a Squared Rim, Pottery Stamp as a Five-Pointed Star with Pottery Following, the Initials "IXL," the Pottery Name, and the Brushed 2 Capacity Number-- all with Four Brushed Stripes Across the Decoration. A brushed cobalt three leaf clover adorns the back. Stands 11 1/2" tall.
The IXL represents "I Excel" and was the pottery bragging!
Excellent Condition. A couple nibbles and three chips on the rim (3/8" to 3/4"). That's it! No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
