Item 9156
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Ovoid Jug stamped "Higgins & Co., Cleveland, O."
As far as we know, the Higgins Company was a distributor of stoneware made in the Portage/Summit area of Ohio by makers like I.M. Mead whose pottery so closely resembles pottery marked Higgins. The Higgins Company was in operation at least from 1848-1851 (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, p. 88).
This beauty features an Early Ovoid Form, Applied Handle with Cobalt Accent on the Terminals, Advertising Stamped on the Shoulder with Cobalt Accent, and a Huge Brushed Cobalt Double Tulip Decoration. Four small leaves and two large loop leaves support two large blossoms. Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A flat 1/2" chip on the right side of the handle near the top, four small side-by-side chips on the bottom in the back (1/8" to 1/2"), and some staining from use. No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
