Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Ovoid Jar stamped "Higgins & Co., Cleveland, O."

As far as we know, the Higgins Company was a distributor of stoneware made in the Portage/Summit area of Ohio by makers like I.M. Mead whose pottery so closely resembles pottery marked Higgins.  The Higgins Company was in operation at least from 1848-1851 (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, p. 88).

This beauty features an Early Ovoid Form, Tall Rim, Inscribed Shoulder, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent on the Front, Capacity Number and Advertising Stamped on the Shoulder with Cobalt Wash, and a Brushed Cobalt Tulip Decoration.  Stands 12 1/2" tall.

Very Good Condition.  Two chips inside the rim (3/16", 1/2"), one outside the rim (7/8"), and glaze wear in the middle of the front to the left.  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A kiln touch with a couple chips in it on the right side near the bottom in the making.
