Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar stamped "Hugh Smith & Co.."
Hugh Smith was a china and pottery merchant in Alexandria, Virginia. This stamp was used between 1821 and 1824 when the potter, John Swann, made pottery for Hugh Smith (Eddie Wilder, Alexandria, Virginia Pottery 1792-1876, pp. 81-85).
The jar is inscribed M on the bottom indicating that it was made and initialed by the potter Benedict C. Milburn.
This beauty features a Small Size, Ovoid Shape, Rounded Rim, Hugh Smith Stamp, a Brushed Cobalt Floral in Alexandria Style, and Milburn's Initial on the Bottom. There is an inscribed M on the bottom. Stands 8 1/2" tall.
Very Good Condition. A tight hairline on the back from below the rim to the base (closeup). No chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
