Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early desirable 3 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "I. M. Mead, Mogadore, Ohio."
This is the mark of Ira Mead, one of Ohio's earliest potters who worked in Portage County, Ohio in the 1830's to the 1850's (See F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 27-29).
Made around 1840, this beauty has an Early Ovoid Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number, and a Brushed Cobalt Left-Leaning Tulip. The tulip has a dash at the base representing the ground, curvy stem, five leaves, and a blossom with five petals. Stands 13" tall.
Very Good Condition. Glaze loss and one large chip inside at the bottom and scattered light staining. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Two 1" glazed drying lines on the back bottom, and dry glaze in the making.
