Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 1/2 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "I. M. Mead, Portage Co., Ohio."
This is the mark of Ira Mead, one of Ohio's earliest potters who worked in Portage County, Ohio in the 1830's to the 1850's (See F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 27-29).
Made around 1840, this jar has an Early Ovoid Form and Pottery Stamp Accented in Cobalt. Additional cobalt accent on the front of the handle terminals as well. Stands 9" tall.
Good Condition. A 1 1/8" chip and four smaller chips (1/8" to 1/2") on the rim, and some light staining from use. No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
