Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Huge 4 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. & C. Hart, Sherburne."
This is the work of James Hart and his son, Charles, who built a pottery in Sherburne, N.Y. and worked together using this stamp from 1841-1850 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 74-75).
This beauty features a Large Size, Ovoid Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Brushed Capacity Number with Three Underscores. Stands 12 3/4" tall.
Fair Condition. Three chips on the inner ring upon which the lid sits (1/4" to 3/4"), a 2" narrow chip and three others inside or on top of the rim (1/4" to 3/4"), one chip outside the rim (1"), a 6" sealed hairline from the rim on the front, and a sealed crack on the back from the right handle down to below the left handle and partially across the bottom (closeup).
