Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 4 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large and Exquisite Pheasant on a Stump Decoration. This is one of Norton's signature decorations, and this one is precisely executed with a slip cup in shiny cobalt. The pheasant is 9" from head to tail! Stands 17" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some scattered light staining. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
