Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 1 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. F. Brayton & Co., Utica."
This is the work of Jonathan Brayton, son of George Brayton who worked his father's pottery from 1833 to 1837 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 69).
This beauty features an Early Date, Ovoid Form, Tall Neck, Applied Handles, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Brushed Cobalt Tulip in Dark Cobalt. A lot of tulip for one gallon! Measures 8 1/2" tall and 7 1/2 " wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Minor nibbles around the inside of the rim, four small chips (1/8" or less) and a 3/4" chip outside the rim, and a 3/8" chip on the underside at the edge. No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
