Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Stunning 5 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "J. Mantell, Penn Yan."
This is the work of James Mantell who potted in Penn Yan, New York from 1856-1876 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 72) .
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Large Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large and Intricate Floral that Fills the Entire Front. The floral sport three pairs of different types of leaves--looped, straight, and veined. Atop the leafy stem sit two large blossoms with eight petals each. Bold and shiny cobalt too! Measures 11 1/2" tall and 13" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. A 1/2" chip inside and outside of the rim, and some staining around the base. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
