Item 10895
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Stunning 4 Gallon Cream Pot made and stamped by "J. Mantell, Penn Yan."
This is the work of James Mantell who potted in Penn Yan, New York from 1856-1876 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 72) .
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Rounded Cream Pot Form, Rounded Rim, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large and Intricate Plant that Fills the Entire Front. The plant is a unique mixture of cobalt slip cup and brush work. A small pot gives way to two larger leaves and two main stems with nine blossoms in all! Strong cobalt throughout the decoration. Measures 12 3/4" tall and 11 1/4" wide across the top.
This is one of the best pieces of Mantell decorated stoneware that I recall ever seeing.
Excellent Condition. Some water glass staining inside, some scattered light staining outside, and a 1/4" chip on the right handle. No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
