Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Early 4 1/2 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. Remmey, Manhattan-Wells, New York."
This is the work of John Remmey III who made pottery in New York City from 1791-1820 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , p. 63).
This beauty features an Unusual 4 1/2 Gallon Size, Ovoid Shape, Tooled Rim, Open Handles with Cobalt Accent, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash on One Side and an Incised Decoration with Heart and Cobalt Fill on the Other. Stands 13" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 1" chip on the rim above one handle, a 1/4" chip on the footer, and one handle restored (closeup). Some surface craze lines throughout. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or stains. A small recess below the pottery stamp and a kiln touch below the decoration in the making.
