Item 9789
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this rare 1/2 Gallon Pitcher made and stamped by "J. Swank & Co., Johnstown, PA."
This is the work of Jacob Swank who ran the family pottery in Johnstown using this stamp in the 1860s (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 100-102).
This beauty features a Small 1/2 Gallon Size, Tall Neck with Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Bulbous Body, Pottery Stamp, and Freehand Cobalt Decoration. The decoration includes leaves down both sides of the spout, three dashes on each side of the rim, and a sideway tulip with blossom across the base. Additional cobalt on the handle terminals, with the bottom being an entire tulip! Stands 8 1/4" tall.
Good Condition. A 1/4" chip on the spout and a vertical hairline in the front to the right from near the base to just above the shoulder (closeup). Superficial lines inside, bottom right, and underside which for the most part do not seem to match up on both sides to form a hairline.
