Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Stoneware Jar made by "Jas. Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA" with Fancy Decoration.
James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down are: a stripe framing the rim and another one framing the shoulder, a fancy emblem at the shoulder, two more fancy emblems forming the compay advertising in larger letters in the middle, and the capacity number flanked by leaves and umderscored by another stripe at the base. Very attractive cobalt on a medium gray glaze for en eye-appealing contrast. Stands 13 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A half-dollar size professional cosmetic touchup on the right side for what may have been a surface stone ping (closeup). Otherwise, as made.
