Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this splendid 1 Gallon Wax Sealer Canning Jar made by "J. Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA."  
 
James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157). 
 
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Finely Tooled Grooved Rim, Slightly Canted Sides, and the Company Advertising Presented in a Patriotic Shield.  The shield is outlined by dashes and the company advertisng accented by florals. The shield is framed by a straight and wavy stripe at the top and a straight stripe at the bottom.  Stands 9 1/4" tall. 
 
Excellent Condition.  An 1/8" nibble on the inner rim and two contiguous 1/4" sliver chips inside the outer rim.  That's it!  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  A kiln touch at the base in the making.
