Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "John Burger, Rochester."
This is the mark of John Burger who founded the family's pottery in Rochester, NY using this stamp and ran the pottery from 1854-1867 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number "2", and a Large Tulip Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup. The tulip boasts five accented leaves, and a blossom with alternating striped and cross hatched petals. The decoration is precise, crisp, and executed in dark and shiny cobalt. Stands 11 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two chips on the inner lid seating ring (1/4", 1"), and a small rust stain on the right side. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
