Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Storage Jar made and stamped by "John Burger, Rochester."
This is the mark of John Burger who founded the family's pottery in Rochester, NY using this stamp and ran the pottery from 1854-1867 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports a Larger Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Freehand Capacity Number "4", and a Large Daisy Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup. The daisy boasts 5 accented leaves, and a blossom with 9 accented petals. The decoration is precise, crisp, and executed in dark and shiny cobalt. Stands 15 1/2" tall.
Good Condition. Minor nibbles around the inner seating ring where a lid would sit, four small chips inside the rim (1/8" to 1/2"), A 1 1/4" chip under the right handle with some superficial lines below (closeup), and some staining from use. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
