Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 2 Gallon Butter Crock that reads, "Prime Butter from John Smith, East Liverpool, Ohio."

The decoration indicates that it was made in Southwestern Pennsylvania around 1880, most likely at Greensboro by Hamilton and Jones, or James Hamilton.

This beauty features an unusual Wax Sealer Form, Large Size, Top and Bottom Stripe, and the Advertising in an Oval Framed by Tornadoes in the Corners and Resting upon the Capacity Number framed by Two More Tornadoes.  A medium gray glaze and strong cobalt make a very pleasing contrast.   Measures 8" tall and 9 1/2" wide across the top.

This piece comes most recently from the finest collection of Southwestern Pennsylvania stoneware in America today.  Only three of these are known to those of us in the business.  The other two are held firmly in collections.

Excellent Condition.  A faint 2" hairline on the back of the rim that ends inside at the wax seal rim. That's it!  No chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
