Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jug made and stamped by "Julius Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton who ran the family pottery under this stamp from 1838 to about 1844 (See William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp 41-44).
This beauty sports an Early Ovoid Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Brushed Cobalt Capacity Number. This was one of Norton's early signature decorations. Stands 14 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip on the right side of the spout, a 1/2" chip on the top of the handle, and some scattered light staining. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
