Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this impressive 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and Stamped by "N. A. White & Son, Utica, N.Y."
This is the work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles who ran the Whites of Utica family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , pp. 70-71).
This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Huge Orchid with Four Leaves and a Blossom with Two Petals. Lots of variety in the decoration: The four leaves come in two versions of striped and cobalt filled, and the two petals are varied the same. A combination of slip cup and brush work was used to make the decoration. The orchid is 8" tall and 8" wide! Gorgeous cobalt blue throughout. Stands 14 1/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. A 3/8" wide chip on the spout, a 3/8" narrow chip on dthe handle, and some staining from use. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A salt drip on the right side of the decoration in the making.
