Item 9831
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3Gallon Jug made and stamped by "N. A. White and Son, Utica, N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).
Dating about 1870, this beauty features a Large Size, Pottery Stamp, and a Huge Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. An abundance of rich cobalt blue. The bird is 9" from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail. The branch has three striped leaves at the base, an orchid blossom, and seven buds. Stands 15 3/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. Four small 1/4" spots where the cobalt was lost in the firing, and some light staining from use. No spout or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
