Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "N. A. White & Son, Utica, N.Y."

This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).

Dating about 1870, this beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. An abundance of rich cobalt blue.  The bird is 8 3/4" from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail.  The branch has an open blossom and seven buds.  Brilliant cobalt throughout the decoration.  Stands 15 1/2" tall!

Very Good Condition.  A very faint 3" hairline on the right side near the bottom that wraps under 2" (closeup).  That's it!  No chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.  A kiln touch on the spout and shoulder, and two horizontal scratches in the clay below  the bird- all in the making.
