Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "N.White & Co., Binghamton."
This is one of the marks of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Pottery in Utica, N.Y. He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 for his father-in-law, and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , p. 71).
This beauty features a Strong Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and an Elaborate Poppy Decoration for which this pottery was known. The poppy features a dozen base leaves and a blossom with a large sectioned center surrounded by six dotted petals. The decoration is executed with a slip cup in bright and shiny cobalt. Stands 11 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some light staining on the back from use. That's it! No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A kiln touch on top of the handle and a 1 1/2" surface drying line on the bottom of the left side in the making (closeup).
