Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Stoneware Harvest or Field Jug made and incised for "Nathaniel Coleman, Oct. 16th, 1871."
Farmers occasionally received personalized harvest jugs. These jugs have a larger spout for filling and a smaller one for drinking. They kept drinks cooler while the farmer was out in the field.
This one was made and stamped by "W. J. & E. G. Schrop" These brothers were trained by the potter Fitch Purdy and ran a pottery in Springfield Township, Summit County, Ohio from about 1871 (see F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 80-82).
This beauty features a Rich Albany Slip Glaze with Bottom Stripe, the Pottery Stamp, and the Personalized Freehand Scraffito. Stands 10 1/2" tall.
