Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Cream Pot with Large Tulip.
The decoration indicates that it was made by Sawyer and Smith of Akron, Ohio.
While a few signed examples exist. this potting duo remains a mystery to local historians! (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 101, 113).
Dating around 1860, this beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Carefully Tooled Rim, and Large Freehand Tulip on the Front. The tulip has ground cover, stem with two open and dotted leaves, and a blossom with seven petals and s squiggley stamin. Measures 10 3/4" tall and 8 1/2" wide across the top.
Good Condition. A 1 1/2" chip inside the rim, 3 chips outside the rim on the right side (1/4" to 1"), a 2 1/2" hairline behind the right handle (closeup), a very faint 1" hairline to the right of the capacity number, a 1" chip under the left handle, and some surface wear and staining from use. No base chips, cracks, or restoration.
