Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this 1 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped on the back "Olean, N.Y."
This is the mark of Edwin A. Montell who ran the pottery in Olean from 1869 to 1874 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 73.
This beauty features a Lidded Preserve Jar form, Tooled Rim and Shoulder, Pottery Stamp, and a Large Brushed Cobalt Tulip Blossom with Six Petals. Stands 9 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Minor nibbles on the inner lid seating ring, two small chips on the right side of the rim (1/8", 1/4"), and a 1/2" chip on the right side bottom partly in the making. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Small stone ping where the blossom meets the stem in the making.
