Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "P. H. Smith."
This is the mark of Phillip Smith who made pottery in Springfield Township, Ohio in the 1840's and 1850's under this stamp (See F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware , pp. 79-80).
Made around the 1850's, this Jar has the Early Ovoid Form,Tall Neck with Squared Rim, Inscriped Shoulder, and Impressed Capacity Number and Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Swipe, and a Large Brushed Cobalt Tulip. Stands 13 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A couple nibbles and a 1 1/2" chip on the rim in the back, two nibbles on the left handle, a 1" narrow chip under the right handle, and minor chips around the base. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 2" surface-only drying/firing line inside not seen outside (closeup).
