Item 1043
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful Stoneware Mug that reads, "The Slums of S. W. Princeton, C '91."
This mug was made for the Freshman class of Princeton University in 1887, the class of 1891. The slums refers to freshman housing at that time which was considered inadequate.
The decoration makes it easy to attribute the mug to Richard Remmey of Philadelpia. Remmey made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1887, this beauty features Incised Decoration to Include Top and Bottom Bands and Two Lines of Fancy Writing Inbetween. All the decoration is filled with cobalt. Stands 4 3/8" tall.
Excellent Condition. A minor 1/8" nibble on the underside in the back and some light staining from use. That's it! No rim chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
